Making 2010 a Greener Year
If it’s your New Year’s Resolution to go green in 2010, read on for a list of suggestions as to how you might get this year off to an environmentally friendly start.
1. Insulation - This is one of the most important factors in energy efficiency. If your home is not properly insulated, heat will escape easily wasting your energy and therefore your money. Sort out your insulation and you’ve made a valuable step towards making your home a more efficient place.
2. Get a new boiler - If you’re still running a household off an ancient model then chances are it is costing you a huge amount of gas and electricity to keep your radiators warm. Take a look at Baxi Main boilers, or Bosch’s range of environmentally friendly models, to see what options could be available to you.

3. Go solar - Solar power is becoming more and more affordable every day. There are many government programmes helping people to make the initial solar investment, which will lead to enormous savings on your energy bills in future.
4. Don’t drink bottled water - Instead of buying a bottle of water every time you feel thirsty, invest in a flask (made from recycled materials, of course) and try to remember to take it with you before you leave the house, reducing the amount of rubbish and recycling work you create.
5. Lug a mug - The ‘Lug a Mug’ campaign has been around for a while now and encourages us to ask our favourite coffee houses to brew their magic into our own portable, lidded mugs instead of using take-away cups which are often not recyclable or biodegradable.
6. Don’t throw your electrical goods away in the trash - Many of their components are poisonous to the earth and if they are not removed during the rubbish sorting process they can do real damage to our earth. To avoid the risk, look out for government electronics recycling initiatives in your area.
7. Face the facts - Make sure you know exactly how energy efficient your home is. Try taking British Gas’s survey online (you don’t have to be a customer to take part) and receive free information on how to begin making your home a more environmentally friendly place to live. Check their website for the details of their Baxi Main – a boiler which sells itself on renewable technology and energy efficiency. Once you are armed with the correct information you can start to make big changes to the way you live, which in turn will have an enormous positive impact on the world around you.
If you’re truly dedicated to reducing your energy bills, however, and making long term savings, you should think about improving your roof and wall insulation with the latest technology. Again, this will add to the value of your property.
